Im in a Hummer, freeze and drop your balls slowly

Well they say Christmas is a time for good will to all men (and ladies too), well it doesn’t seem this way for a police officer in America.   As the local kids in Washington geared themselves up for a snowball fight, an over protective police officer did what he thought was the right thing to do and presented his firearm out of its holster, and the reason for this is because a few stray snowballs hit the windscreen of his hummer suv!

The crowd that had shown up for this mass free for all in the festive weather had been organized via the social website twitter.  Even after the officer pulled out his gun, the crowd didnt seem deterred from bombarding the plain clothes officer with more snowballs to which the officer then re-holstered his firearm and charged into the crowd to arrest a young lad that had got the officer in the back with a snowball.

When first questioned the officer denied that he had drawn his weapon but after several people had posted pics on YouTube the police department had to come clean about the said incident, police chief Cathy Lanier said  the officer has been placed on desk duty’s, and let me be very clear in stating that I believe the actions of the officer were totally inappropriate.

Only in America, if this happened in London I doubt very much the offer would remain in his post, what are your thoughts?

More female drivers wanted in the limo industry and are men better at parking than women?

At HummerHummer we have always promoted the need for more female chauffeurs in the limo industry.  Back in 2008 we set up a facebook group to search for the very best PCV licenced chauffeurs.  Even with a female focus the majority of applications came from male drivers.  We currently have one female chauffeur within the London area who is gaining gradual experience since passing her PCV test.  We urge more female chauffeurs to come forward and start making headway a change to the male dominated industry for 2010!

Are men better at parking than women?  Feminist scientists proves what sexist motorists have known all along…

Male drivers have long boasted they are superior to women, particularly when it comes to parking.
And now their claims have been borne out by the first scientific study into the subject.
Psychologists asked 65 volunteers to park a £23,000 Audi repeatedly in a sealed-off university car park.

Reverse psychology: Women drivers were slower and less accurate, tests found

The results, which are bound to reignite long-running arguments between couples, found that women took up to 20 seconds longer to park in the same space.
But although they were more cautious about edging into position, it did not make them any more accurate, and they tended to end up much closer to the edge of the bays than the male drivers.
Scientists from Ruhr University in Bochum, Germany, found men were better at driving both head-on into the space and reversing into it.

However, the biggest difference was in parallel parking, where men were found to be five per cent better in their handling and positioning of the vehicle.
Researchers concluded the men had better co-ordination and spatial awareness because their brains could process the changing speed and position of the car more quickly.
Dr Claudia Wolf, who co-wrote the study, said she was prompted to investigate the subject after getting fed up with chauvinistic jokes about female drivers .
She told The Mail on Sunday: ‘These prejudices exist and as a scientist I decided to find out if they are true or based on myth.
‘I don’t think that feminism or the cause of women is in any way set back by these findings. It only proves what previous studies about the spatial differences between men and women have shown.
Germaine Greer: ‘You must remember women also have bosoms, which makes it very difficult to turn around’

‘Besides, it is not as if there was a massive failing by women. It is just about parking - not the triumph of men over women.’
The drivers - who had varying degrees of driving experience, but were of similar ages and intelligence – were asked to park an Audi A6 Limousine automatic, a large, family saloon, in a 15ft by 6ft space.
The scientists measured both the time between the car’s first movement and the driver turning off the engine and how close the car ended up to the white tape marking out the bays. The more central the car ended up in the space, the better.
The psychologists admitted they were surprised that females’ extra caution did not bring better results.
Their paper noted: ‘The marked difference in parking duration could be explained in terms of general driving habits. Several studies prove that men take greater driving risks.
‘However, a sex difference in riskassessment leading to women parking more cautiously, and thus more slowly, does not explain whywomen’s final parking position was less accurate than men’s, especially for parallel parking. Slower driving should lead to a better and not worse result.’
Last night, feminist author Germaine Greer admitted that men were better parkers than women, but criticisedthe scientists for undertaking the ‘pointless’ study.
She said: ‘I can believe that men were proven to have a very insignificant advantage in spatial awareness when it comes to parking.

‘My mum parked appallingly, but that’s because my father did not let her drive very often and she was frightened in the car.

‘You must remember that women also have bosoms which makes it very difficult to turn around.
‘However, did we really this? Should we now stop women from parking? Of course not. These scientists were just trying to provoke people like me and it sounds like an extreme waste of resources.’

Tips for safer driving as London hits snow fall this morning

London has been embraced with snow fall this morning, with the help of twitterers and a great new web 2.0 style site twitter members all over the UK are able contribute to create an insant snow map.  Twitterers add #uk snow, the postcode they currently see snow and the amount of snow determined as..0/10 for nothing, 5/10 for steady snow and 10/10 for arctic blizzard conditions….genius!  We started to see snow at 10.50am here at our limousine base in Park Royal, Middlesex.  Since 11pm snow fall has been cited through Central London hitting Leicester Square.

As much as most of us adore a white Xmas we would like to ask for your caution on the roads as driving conditions get tougher in our heavily congested city.  Here are 5 tips for safe travel practice when snow falls…..

1. Dont drive at all!

  • We may still complain but London has been voted as having the best public transport system in the world, so folks… use it!  You can check your route and any delays via the transport for London website.  The website is also compatible via most mobile enabled handsets.

2. Prepare your car

  • Check the tyres for air, sidewall wear and tread depth.
  • Check antifreeze levels.
  • Check the ignition, brakes, wiring, hoses.
  • Checking the air, fuel and emission filters, and the PCV valve.
  • Inspecting the distributor.
  • Check the battery.

3. Keep the neccessary tools in your car at all times

  • Keep an ice scraper, defroster and cloth in your car
  • Ensure you have a full tank of petrol in case your route gets diverted

4. Plan your route carefully

  • Many of you will now be using a sat nav system, perhaps select ‘travel on main route’ / ‘lorry type vehicle’ option ensuring you are minimising minor roads which may not have been gritted.

5. Drive cautiously

  • Ensure there is at least 10 seconds distance between you and the car in front.
  • Drive in as high gear as possible minimising the risk of skidding, ensure smooth, slow turns.
  • If your vehicle skids DO NOT hit the brakes, ease off the acceerator and try to steer gently into the direction of the skid.

 When it snows too much

So enjoy the snow but just be a little cautious!

Best Regards,

Drive 09 limo show set to be a controversial one

This weekend the limousine industry braces itself for this years UK limousine and chauffeur show entitled Drive 09.  Being held for a second year at the Transport research laboratory in Berkshire the show is set to spark major  controversary amongst the current limo industry and I emulate ‘current’ whereby VOSA take seat to answer to the recent new limousine laws coming into effect from 1st October 2009.  There has been so much debate around the industry there is even a new website dedicated to Save UK limos.

Drive 09 show

Drive 09 show

So what are all these new laws about?  Apparently all limousine operators need to have an operators licence along with the relevant SVA / COIF certificate for each of its vehicles.  What has caused the outrage is that at present there is only one small company in the whole of the UK who can achieve a COIF on a Hummer, secondly there  seem to be major objections to the pricing of the conversion and thirdly there is a waiting list in order to get your Hummer COIF’d.  From the operators point of view it is not viable to hold trading from 1st october whilst awaiting COIF certification whilst also paying out a huge sum of money for the conversion.  Companies will undoubtedly go down and of course jobs and livelihoods dimnished.  Not exactly great timing in the height of the credit crunch.

From our personal point of view we are all for regulation,  certainly if it will set a professional standard for future.   However, there must be grace provided from VOSA in order for companies to be able to have an appropriate, commercial channel to get what is required done.  Considering COIF’ing of Hummers has only been commercially available by one company over the last 6 months or so, has grace been provided?   The NLCA (National Limousine and Chauffeur Association) have always stated you can run a 16 passenger limousines through the current schedule 6 operation as long as it has been operated on properly.  Over the last two years companies have already spent approx. £6,000 through Digital Tachographs, Speed limiters and other schedule 6 factors in order to meet compliance.  The Digital Tachograph is another matter whereby it has not been commercially available for operators, two companies could provide this service and tat was from 2009.  So where does this leave the genuine limousine operators who are trying to run a professional company and who have been running their operation through the advice of the official national limousine body?

We will be interested to hear your feedback….
